Recent river level rises on large river systems across Southeast Alaska can be attributed to high freezing levels which approached 9000 feet at the end of last week. The warm temperatures aloft generated large amounts of snow melt runoff. The freezing levels tumbled over the weekend to between 3000 and 4000 feet Monday morning. Average freezing levels are around 5500 feet across Southeast Alaska at the end of may. The cooler temperatures have slowed the snow melt rate and subsequently most rivers have temporarily crested. The river are still running well above average and will continue to do so through the coming weeks. Copious amounts of snow remain at high elevations in Southeast Alaska. On Monday May 28 the Long Lake snotel station reported 99 inches of snow depth and 49 inches of snow water equivalent. The snow water equivalent value is over 160% of normal for the date. Significant river level rises will occur during the first half of Summer if Southeast Alaska is subjected to a period of high freezing levels and/or significant rainfall. Residents and recreationalists should be aware of the potential of prolonged periods of high water. The annual release of the Glacier dams...jokulhlaups...on lake No Lake and Tulsequah Lake that drains into the Taku River typically occurs in late July/early August and mid to late June respectively. If these lakes empty with well above normal river levels there will be an increased threat for flooding along the Taku River. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1750: Cloudy. 1650: Cloudy. 1550: Cloudy. 1450: Cloudy. 1350: Cloudy. 1336: Very Light Rain, Cloudy. 1320: Cloudy, Sun was trying in the past few minutes. 1250: Cloudy. 1150: Cloudy with some clouds around the very top of Mt.
