Rainfall rates across Southeast Alaska continue to increase early
this morning with the rain expected to be heavy at times through the
morning. One half to 2 inches of rain is possible across the region
today.
This rain is falling on a deep snow pack that is covering storm
drains and drainage ditches. Ponding of water on roads and low lying
areas is expected to become more widespread Friday morning.
Storm drains should be kept clear of snow debris as much as
possible. Watch out for ponding of water on roadways. Do not drive
your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The
water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move
to higher ground.
In addition...a warmer airmass at higher elevations has pushed
avalanche danger into the extreme category. If you live or work near
a steep hillside pay close attention to changing weather and snow
conditions and be prepared to leave the area immediately.
A flood advisory includes ponding of water in urban or other areas
that is occurring or is imminent and has potential to be a hazardous
situation.

Gulch path up Gold Creek released a deep
and wide slab avalanche that temporarily
dammed the creek by filling it with debris.
Natural avalanche activity has been minimal
today due to the gradual thaw, but even 20
minutes of hard rain at elevation would still
release large slabs. The Weather Service
forecast is close enough to these conditions
that we cannot drop the danger level at this
time.AdvisorySAAC06_07"

- 1400: Avalanche Danger Extreme: From the
Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center:
"The Weather Service is forecasting
more light to moderate rain with some heavier
rain showers at sea level for the rest of
the day, continued SE winds, and a rain level
continuing to rise but not quite reaching
the top of the starting zones.
Avalanche explosive delivery by DOT&PF
above Thane Road this morning brought down
a number of large dry slab avalanches and
appears from a distance to have left about
300m (1000') of roadway under 2-8m (7-26')
of debris.
The forecast weather might allow the snow
to settle in place if the thaw is gradual
and rainfall remains light, but even a short
burst of heavy rain to higher elevations
would release large slab avalanches. We will
have to keep the danger level at Extreme
until that threat has time to pass.AdvisorySAAC06_07"

"The Weather Service is forecasting
a large storm that will bring heavy snow
and strong SE winds late tonight, with rain
to starting zone elevations by tomorrow.
The starting zones are fat with snow, and
a large slab avalanche that was triggered
by a small cornice break on the Snowslide
Gulch path up Gold Creek last night shows
that the snowpack holds potential for big
slides.
Any of these weather factors alone would
release slides. Snow, wind, and rain acting
in combination are virtually certain to trigger
an avalanche cycle. We are raising the danger
level to Extreme tonight so people have time
to prepare for the late-night storm."

...Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late tonight through
Wednesday morning...
A weather system will bring heavy snow to the region late tonight
into Wednesday morning. Snow will develop late this evening and
become heavy at times into the overnight hours. Warmer air moving
north will eventually change the heavy snow to heavy rain from
south to north Wednesday morning. Snowfall of 4 to 8 inches is
possible before changing to rain.
A deep snowpack over the region may lead to some minor flooding
in areas where storm drains and culverts are blocked as the
precipitation turns to heavy rain into Wednesday. Increasing snow
loads may also pose a problem for weak structures.
A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of
winter storm conditions in and close to the watch area.

Another winter storm is on track to impact the north central

After brief break from the current winter storm impacting
Southeast Alaska...snow is expected to begin Monday night
continuing into Tuesday for north central Panhandle. Additional
snowfall amounts from this new storm could range from one to two
feet to the snow pack.
An added potential hazard is that the warming is starting in a

930 PM AST Sat Mar 3 2007
...Major winter storm produces large snowfall amounts across the
Panhandle...
A major winter storm produced many large snowfall totals over the
Panhandle during the past few days. A series of low pressure
systems combined with the cold Arctic air already in place over
the Panhandle allowed for the large amount of snowfall. The first
low pressure system moved into the eastern Gulf on Thursday. A
second stronger low pressure system moved northeastward into the
Panhandle on Friday which only helped to increase the snowfall
rates and gusty wind.
Here are some snowfall totals for the Alaskan Panhandle for the
entire winter storm from March 1, 2007 through March 3, 2007.
