A Great Blue Heron on a Sunny Afternoon

This guy or gal was roosting in a row of sitka spruce and western hemlock trees some 100 feet to the north of the house from 10:14 in the morning until at least 2 p.m. There was another heron in those same trees which stayed until at least 4 p.m., but it was tucked among the branches of the trees and was much less visible.

This area with the exception of the Granite Creek Basin, was the site of
intense mining activity – both surface and underground – between 1881 and 1944.
