Evergreen Bowl - Cope Park

The old - circa 1908? (now demolished) 8th Street Reservoir is at the bottom left; 7th Street and Chicken Ridge are on the middle left; the Andrew P. Hope Building and part of West Willoughby Avenue are at the far upper left; part of the Casey-Shattuck addition (”The Flats”) is at the upper right; Gold Creek and Mt. Juneau are on the right.

Evergreen Bowl was originally a patented mining claim, the Boston No. 2, U.S. Mineral Survey 926 located January 1, 1897 and patented January 18, 1917.

Gastineau Peak on Mt. Roberts, a Steam Power Plant, and a Dock

Just left of center is Gastineau Peak (3,666 ft.). The Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co. (AJ) Auxiliary Steam Power Plant built in A.D. 1916 is at the lower left. Along the shore of Gastineau Channel at the Juneau harbor is the South Franklin (cruise ship) Dock built at the site of the AJ Wharf. The low building along the shore, also with a red roof, is the Miners Cove retail building also built on the site of the AJ Wharf.

Mount Bradley

Mount Bradley, also known as Mount Jumbo, is 3,337 feet high and is on Douglas Island with Douglas, Alaska at its foot. In the early years it was named Mount Jumbo, possibly after the Jumbo mining claim located near its base. The people of Douglas in 1939 petitioned the Board of Geographic names to have the mountain renamed after Frederick Worthen Bradley. Mr. Bradley, 1863 - 1933, was president of the Bunker Hill Mine and Sullivan Mine in Idaho, president of the Tacoma Smelting Co., president of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co., and president of the Treadwell, Mexican, and Alaska United Gold Mining Companies - the latter three on Douglas Island southeast of Douglas. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Juneau as well as banks in San Francisco. He was awarded the Saunders Gold Medal for outstanding achievement in mining.

Gold Creek in Silver Bow Basin

In the far distance is Mt. Juneau (center) and the Mt. Juneau Ridge on the right. Silver Bow Basin is 2-1/2 miles east of the Capitol Building in downtown Juneau and is reached by Basin Road and the Perseverance Trail. From the time mining claims were located in late 1880, Silver Bow Basin saw extensive mining, first as placer mining, and then later as underground mining in the mountains on its southwest and south sides. Mining ended April 8, 1944 with the closure of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mine.

Snowslide Gulch and the Northern End of Gold Ridge of Mt. Roberts

This picture was taken from the Mt. Juneau Trail looking southeast across the Gold Creek canyon with the northern end of Gold Ridge of Mt. Roberts at the skyline and the gulches below it that are part of Snowslide Gulch. The primary Snowslide Gulch path slopes diagonally upward from Gold Creek (out of sight at the lower right) and becomes vertical at the upper left of the shoulder of Mt. Roberts. The foot of Snowslide Gulch is 1.2 miles to the ENE of the State Capitol in downtown Juneau and lies at the eastern end of Last Chance Basin. Joe Juneau, Richard Harris, and the Tlingit Chief Kowee climbed Snowslide Gulch October 3, 1880 and crossed over into what Harris named Silver Bow Basin where they discovered gold. The rest they say is history with the founding of the townsite of Juneau.

Cruise Ships along the Juneau Waterfront from the Marine Park Lightering Dock

Left Foreground: The stern end of the Norwegian Sun moored at the Cruise Ship Terminal, Length: 848 feet, 2002 passengers and 968 crew. It will visit Juneau 19 times in 2006.

Center: The Diamond Princess moored at the South Franklin Dock, Length: 950 feet, 2600 passengers and 1240 crew. It will visit Juneau 18 times in 2006.

Right Background: The AJ Rock Dump which shields the Juneau harbor, created from waste rock and tailings from the Alaska Juneau Gold Mine which closed April 8, 1944.

The distance from where I took the picture to Sheep Mountain (see picture below) is 3-7/8 miles. From my house I can see the Mt. Juneau Ridge and the tip-top of Olds Mountain, Mt. Roberts, Gastineau Peak, Gold Ridge, and Last Chance Basin.

There is a major flaw in the image though…because the far right portion of the image was shot from too great a distance from the remainder of the other pictures, the difference in perspective causes a problem in the lower part of Snowslide Gulch.
