On the afternoon of Monday, April 13th, the Alaska State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities performed avalanche control work on Mt. Roberts above Thane Road using a 105-mm Howitzer located at the old Treadwell Mine site on Douglas Island. The black smudges occurred from that shooting.
