The AJ Rock Dump - 2,500 feet Below

Lawson Creek and a small part of the Lawson Creek Delta is visible at the far upper right. On the Rock Dump at the far left is the Juneau-Douglas Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Alaska Marine Lines facility is on the top left. The AJ (cruise ship) Dock is at the far upper right corner. The light green petroleum tank farm is part of Delta Western’s 6 acre facility and the white petroleum tank farm is part of Taku Oil Sales’ 8.99 acre facilty.

Coming down the Mt. Roberts Trail

Douglas Island is on the left and Mt. Juneau on the right with Gastineau Channel and downtown Juneau (including the Federal Building, Harris Harbor, and Aurora Basin) between. The Chilkat Mountains on the far side of Lynn Canal are in the far distance; the Mendenhall wetlands with the Juneau International Airport are off the end of Douglas Island and the Mendenhall Peninsula and Auke Bay are beyond that.

The Juneau Federal Building and Post Office

The building was officially re-named on May 13, 1999 as the Hurff A. Saunders Federal Building after the man who was the federal government’s civil engineer in charge of construction. Ground breaking ceremonies were held July 8, 1963 at the site of the former Fireman’s Park baseball field with completion of the building in 1966. The view is from the 8th Level Plaza of the State Office Building with Gastineau Channel and Douglas Island in the background.
