Looking Down From Mt. Roberts

Two Cruise Ships at Night

These cruise ships are moored along the downtown Juneau waterfront. The Holland America Line ship Amsterdam is on the left at the Alaska Steamship Dock. Celebrity Cruises Mercury is on the right at the Cruiseship Terminal - which was formerly the Alaska State Ferry Terminal.

The Amsterdam is 780 feet long (61,000 gross tons) with a passenger capacity of 1,380, a crew of 647, and makes 18 visits to Juneau in 2007. It was launched in 2000 and is the third ship bearing the name of the Dutch capital in Holland America Line’s more than 130-year history.

The Mercury is 866 feet long (77,713 gross tons) with a passenger capacity of 1,882, a crew of 909, and makes 20 visits to Juneau in 2007. The ship’s inaugural date was November 2, 1997.

Two Cruise Ships in the Juneau Harbor

The 965 ft. long Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Star is in the center at the A.J. Dock, with Princess Cruises’ 950 ft. long Diamond Princess in the right background at the South Franklin Dock. Mt. Juneau is on the left in the background with the main waterfall partly visible at the far left. Mt. Roberts is on the right. The Norwegian Star carries 2,240 passengers and 1,100 crew and made twenty visits to Juneau in 2006. The Diamond Princess carries 2,600 passengers and 1,240 crew and made eighteen visits to Juneau in 2006.

Cruise Ships along the Juneau Waterfront from the Marine Park Lightering Dock

Left Foreground: The stern end of the Norwegian Sun moored at the Cruise Ship Terminal, Length: 848 feet, 2002 passengers and 968 crew. It will visit Juneau 19 times in 2006.

Center: The Diamond Princess moored at the South Franklin Dock, Length: 950 feet, 2600 passengers and 1240 crew. It will visit Juneau 18 times in 2006.

Right Background: The AJ Rock Dump which shields the Juneau harbor, created from waste rock and tailings from the Alaska Juneau Gold Mine which closed April 8, 1944.

Crystal Cruises cruise ship Crystal Harmony makes 11 voyages to Juneau in the 2005 visitor season with it's last visit on September 21; this is it's last year of cruising in Alaska. The ship is 790 feet long, carries 940 passengers plus 545 crew members for a total of 10,340 passengers visting Juneau this year. The Steamship Dock, now owned by the City and Borough of Juneau was built by The Alaska Steamship Company which operated for 77 years from 1894 - 1971.
