Picture taken from Mt. Roberts. Douglas, Alaska on Douglas Island is visble across Gastineau Channel from Mt. Roberts on the mainland. Lawson Creek and a small part of the Lawson Creek Delta is visible at the far upper right. On the Rock Dump at the far left is the Juneau-Douglas Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Alaska Marine Lines facility is on the top left. The AJ (cruise ship) Dock is at the far upper right corner. The light green petroleum tank farm is part of Delta Western’s 6 acre facility and the white petroleum tank farm is part of Taku Oil Sales’ 8.99 acre facilty.

The Juneau Federal Building and Post Office

The building was officially re-named on May 13, 1999 as the Hurff A. Saunders Federal Building after the man who was the federal government’s civil engineer in charge of construction. Ground breaking ceremonies were held July 8, 1963 at the site of the former Fireman’s Park baseball field with completion of the building in 1966. The view is from the 8th Level Plaza of the State Office Building with Gastineau Channel and Douglas Island in the background.

Dimond State Courthouse - Juneau

The Dimond State Courthouse - A.D. 1974, was named after Anthony Joseph Dimond: US Commissioner in Chisana, Alaska (1913-1914); Special Assistant US Attorney for the 3rd Judicial Division of Alaska in Valdez (1917); Mayor of Valdez (1920-1922, 1925-1932); Alaska Territorial Senate (1923–1926, 1929–1932); Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from Alaska Territory’s at-large congressional district from March 4, 1933 – January 3, 1945; District Judge for the 3rd Division of Alaska (1945–1953); and a champion of statehood.

Main Street is in the foreground and 4th Street is on the left. The corner of the State Capitol is on the far left. In the distance to the right of the sloping glass roof of the Courthouse, the upper stories of the Baranof Hotel are visible and to the lower right of the Courthouse is the State of Alaska’s Community Building. Mt. Roberts is in the background. A reflection of the mountains on Douglas Island can be seen in the windows of the Courthouse.
